The construction of this fire station began in 1900 and was already finished and ready for operation in Mai 1902. Once planned for horse-drawn emergency vehicles, today it still fulfils the tasks of a highly engineered world of fire fighting. The former horse stables were converted into vehicle parking spaces. At that time the high timber-framed tower served as a hose drying room. The squad’s sleeping quarters, the clothing and equipment room, kitchen, dining room, washrooms and bathrooms as well as a recreation room were located above the vehicle shelter. There was even an infirmary for the horses. Today, from the approx. 100 fire-fighters, 24 are always on duty or work in the affiliated departments such as telecommunications, first-aid and the specialty department for radiation and measurement and test engineering, fire extinguisher repair shop, joiner’s workshop, fitter’s shop and in the clothing room. The Fire Station 1 is the oldest station of the 5 fire stations belonging to the Nuremberg municipal fire brigade.
