With almost 4,000 units produced, the Prussian P 8, later classified as class 38, went down in history as one of the most powerful steam locomotives of times in terms of number. After the turmoil of the two world wars, they were in service with almost all European railway administrations. Five locomotives ultimately remained in Austria and formed OBB class 638.
