Hasegawa 40026 IJN Light Cruiser Yahagi 1945
During the secong World War the Agano class light cruiser which served the Imperial Japanese Navy is known throughout history as the IJN Yahagi. Intended for use as a flagship of a destroyer flotilla; like many other vessels of her class. She was the second of four vessels completed in the Agano-class of light cruisers. April 6, 1945 marks the day Yahagi received her "Operation Ten-Go" orders to attack the American invasion force on Okinawa. Ordered to accompany Yamato from Tokushima for it's suicide mission against the American fleet Yahagi had no other choice. At 1220 on the 7 day of April 1945, the Yamato force was attacked by 386 aircrafts from Task Force 58. Coming in waves of 180 fighters, 75 bombers, and 131 torpedo planes; light cruiser Yahagi soon found herself under intense bomb and torpedo attacks. At 12:46, Yahagi suffered a direct hit to her engine room, eliminating her entire engineering room crew; bringing her to a complete stop. Dead in the water, Yahagi underwent at least six more torpedo and twelve more bomb attacks succeeded by more waves of air blitzs. Attempting to aid her comrade, the Japanese destroyer Isokaze was heavily damaged and sank to the sands below sometime later. 14:05 at 30°47′N 128°08′E Yahagi capsized and sank taking 445 crewmen with her. Few were rescued by Hatsushimo and Yukikaze, among them were Rear Admiral Komura and Captain Tameichi Hara. Looking to the horizon her survivors could see Yamato in the distance; still steaming south as U.S. aircrafts continued their attacks. In reality, however, Yamato was only minutes away from sinking.
