This type of steam locomotive was the most powerful tender locomotive ever procured by the Deutsche Reichsbahn. A total of 45 units of these huge locomotives were built. It was known as the "Mountain Queen" because it was primarily used on the railway lines Sonneberg-Probstzella, Spessartrampe, Frankenwaldbahn, Geislinger Steige, Schiefe Ebene, and Rübelandbahn. After the Second World War, 31 locomotives of this class became part of the Deutsche Reichsbahn's vehicle fleet. In the 1950s, boiler equipment, fittings, pumps, driver's cabs, and more were adapted to DR practices during maintenance, resulting in substantial standardisation. Between 1966 and 1972, 24 locomotives were converted to oil main firing, and 10 had a new boiler without a feed dome. The Eisfeld-Sonneberg railway line was their last field of operation and the locomotives were not scrapped until 1981.
