For the 1987 summer timetable, new quality standards were set for the cross-border InterCity trains with regard to wagon material, speed and service. Trains that met these criteria were given the designation "EuroCity".
The EC 24 "Erasmus" connected the Tyrolean capital Innsbruck via Munich with Frankfurt on the Main, then along the Rhine via Emmerich with the Dutch capital Amsterdam.
Coaches of this set belonged to the standard equipment of the train and were used on the entire route. A special highlight is a dining coach from the former TEE "Rheingold" of 1983, which the DB hired especially for the introduction of the EuroCity in 1987: Only the orange Rheingold stripe was removed from two dining coaches, while the "Restaurant" lettering remained orange, making them eye-catching "splashes of colour" for more than four years, particularly on EC trains to the Netherlands.
