The design of the locomotives with the so-called "nez cassé" (broken nose) was created by the frenchman Paul Arzens, who at that time was also responsible for the design of several other SNCF locomotives. From 1999, the locomotives were allocated to various business divisions and have since been used in front of various types of trains.
