In 1976 the French State Railways (SNCF) bought 237 multiple-current-system locomotives of the series BB 7200 for the use in the French DC network. The design of the locomotives with the so-called "nez cassé" (broken nose) was created by the frenchman Paul Arzens, who at that time was also responsible for the design of several other SNCF locomotives. From 1999, the locomotives were allocated to various business divisions and have since been used in front of various types of trains.Version with double lamps and rain gutter. Prototype: With 879 units, the BR E 40/140 is the most frequently built standard electric locomotive of the DB vehicle program. At the beginning of its career it reached a maximum permited speed of 100 km / h and hauled medium freight trains. However, this changed in June 1969 because by then it needed to reach an authorised maximum speed of 110 km / h to make the trains run faster. This way the locomotives could be used more efficiently in the passenger traffic.
